Liturgy & Sacraments

What is Matrimony?

Matrimony is the unique Sacrament which binds one man and one woman together in a covenant under God and His Church. It is a Sacrament of vocation, a response to a specific calling that God has placed in the hearts of a couple. It is a bond that lasts for life which is permanent, faithful, and fruitful. Marriage is not just about two people, but is the foundation of the family, the "domestic church," the most basic and foundational structure, not only for the Church, but for all of society.

Celebrating a Wedding

Congratulations on your engagement! We are happy to help you plan your wedding. The Sacrament of Matrimony (Marriage) requires a preparation period which begins with the couple contacting one of our priests at least six months in advance of the wedding date.

Please read information on how to Arrange a Wedding at St. Bridget. We also invite you to look through our Wedding Packet. Once you have looked over the information, please call the Parish Office 815-633-6311. Our secretary will begin the conversation with you about setting the date of your wedding and answer any questions you have.

I had a Civil Marriage but Want to Be Married in the Church

We would be happy to assist you in having your marriage sacramentalized. Many Catholics get married civilly and are not aware that the Church asks us to get married in the Church so that we can receive the Sacrament of Matrimony. Others have a previous marriage situation that needs to be remedied or they are waiting for an annulment. No matter the situation, one of the priests would be happy to assist you in moving forward. Please call the Parish Office at 815-633-6311 to set up an appointment with one of the priests.
